Personal Chef Services Frequently Asked Questions

What is a personal chef?
A personal chef is a professional that comes into your home to prepare a variety of meals based on your specific preferences or dietary needs. The personal chef does the planning, the shopping, the cooking, and the cleanup.

The food is then packaged into containers that are labeled and stored in your refrigerator or freezer to be heated and eaten at your convenience. Detailed heating instructions are provided to make preparation a simple task. You enjoy the convenience of having delicious meals prepared in the safety and comfort of your home, according to your favorite cuisines.

What is the difference between a personal chef and a private chef?
A private chef is employed by one individual or family full-time, and is often "living in," and preparing up to 3 meals per day. A personal chef serves several clients, usually one per day, and provides multiple meals that are custom designed for the client's particular requests and requirements. These meals are packaged and stored so that the client may enjoy them at their leisure.

Do you cook in my kitchen?
Due to health department regulations we have to prepare food in an approved commercial kitchen, or in your home. By cooking in your home, we are able to offer a much more customized menu based on your specific food preferences and dietary needs as opposed to eating what is being prepared that day in a commercial kitchen for everyone. On our agreed-upon cooking date and time, our chefs will arrive bringing all the groceries and cooking utensils to prepare your entrees from scratch on-site in your home. After a few hours, we leave your kitchen as clean as we found it with the aroma of a gourmet restaurant.

Do you deliver meals?
Chef for a Day Catering™ does not deliver meals. All businesses that transport food items (like a restaurant, hotel or catering company) must prepare the food in a health department-inspected, catering-licensed and catering-insured industrial kitchen utilizing approved heated and cooled storage containers (like hot boxes and refrigerated delivery vans). Since Chef for a Day Catering™ prepares everything from scratch there is no need to transport any food items at all. If you are considering a chef service that is not properly licensed and insured for this type of service – be wary – they are

not operating their business in

a safe, healthy or possibly legal manner.

How long will you be here?
It depends on the number of dishes we'll be preparing and the complexity of the dishes you selected for that day. Generally we'll be in your kitchen from 2 hours (3 meals for a family of 4)

to 4 hours (1 week of meals for 1 person). We are willing to work with your schedule or situation, and we can make arrangement in advance so that our cooking does not interfere with your schedule.

Is it okay if I watch - or help
Chef for a Day Catering™ will provide you with the best chef services possible. We only ask to limit your access to the kitchen, while we are using it. We will be preparing several different recipes simultaneously, we

cannot be distracted. When distracted, we could easily forget an ingredient, lose track of cooking/baking time which can result in poor quality meals and we want to provide you with the best meals possible.

If you are interested in learning about the cooking techniques used on your cook date, we'd be happy to set up private one-on-one or group cooking lessons for you at another time

Can you use my containers?
No. We will purchase containers at the beginning of your service and replace the containers as needed (based on normal wear and tear) throughout your service. Once again, uniform

size containers take less storage

space in your fridge/freezer, we will discuss with you on container options when we do your initial consultation.

Can I afford it?
Absolutely! Most of our clients are surprised to find out just how affordable this service has become. A personal chef is no longer just for the rich and famous. Simply calculate how much money you spend on eating out during the week, not to mention the unhealthy choices made when eating out with fast foods. The average American family spends over $1,000 per month on groceries and restaurant meals. A personal chef can not only save you money but can save you time to spend with your family by eliminating the time spent on preparing meals.

Personal Chef Services Frequently Asked Questions

What type of entrees and side dishes do you prepare? Can I choose the menu?
During the initial consultation, we will become familiar with your likes, dislikes, allergies, and dietary needs. Chef for a Day Catering™ has a standard menu that changes several times a year and is customizable. Also, you may make specific requests. We can prepare any type of cuisines, regional or national, local or international. Go ahead and challenge us. Our only restriction is finding the best ingredients available on your cook date.

What areas do you cover?
Chef for a Day Catering™ serves mostly the city of Pittsburgh and a 40 mile radius from the city. We are willing to travel further but this may requires additional travel fees.

Do I have to sign a contract?
No, Chef for a Day Catering™ personal chef service does not require a commitment. Once you become a regular client and you prefer a specific day for your service, then that will be noted and that will be reserved as your day. Invoices and deposits are required by Chef for a Day Catering™ for all clients.

How do we pay you?
Chef for a Day Catering™ accepts cash, check, PayPal and most major credit cards. We send bills by mail or email within seven days from your

date of service. For our regularly scheduled customers we bill bi-monthly on the 1st and 15th of the month. You'll receive an invoice outlining your services and grocery expenses accompanied by receipts.

Why do you charge a services fee + Groceries – Can't I just pay you a flat fee?
By splitting the service fee and grocery fee it allows for more equitable billing. Someone who orders dishes with less expensive ingredients should not be charged the same amount as someone who orders dishes with very expensive ingredients. We feel you should pay for what you order not a flat fee that applies to everyone.

Do all the meals have to be frozen?
No, many of your meals may be stored in the freezer. We do leave meals in the refrigerator to be eaten within 3-5 days from the day of preparation. Fresh seafood or fish entrée must be consumed within the first 2 days of service. We placed each prepared item

in the proper location being the refrigerator or freezer. We provide detail heating instructions. If you follow the proper heating instructions you will never know an item has

been frozen.

Do I heat the food?
Yes. Any entrée’s that have been stored for you in your freezer should be defrosted overnight in your refrigerator, and heated to be enjoyed at the peak of their flavor. We will leave you detailed heating instructions for each entrée. We ensure that your entire meal is prepared in less than 20-25 minutes.

How much fridge or freezer space will I need?
It depends on the number of meals that you are selecting for your service. At your initial consultation we will investigate your refrigerator and freezer together to ensure there will be enough space to store your orders. Efficient storage is one of the reasons we prefer to select uniform, appropriately sized storage containers for our clients. Also, we would like to keep a little pantry space set aside– for salt, pepper, flour, etc., that we may buy to use over several cook dates.

How long will the food last us?
Depending on how many entrée’s you order, and how many evenings you plan to eat at home, we can determine approximately how long your meals will last. If you travel for business, or entertain in restaurants during the week, or just enjoy eating out on occasion, the meals will take you further than if you eat in every night. We don't want you to feel obligated to stay in 7 nights a week to eat our meals. Many other personal chefs try to sell you as many servings and entrée’s as possible – loaded straight into the freezer – stocking you up with food that you just don't need and only coming back if the freezer is empty. We are happy to work with you and discuss some service options be it biweekly, weekly, bimonthly, monthly or just when you need us for that special occasion. Our personal chef service is here to provide you with high quality meals when you want or need them – not to "keep you at home" every night away from social events.
